Johann Moritz Rugendas

Rugendas (1802-1858) was born in Augsburg, Germany, into the seventh generation of a family of noted painters and engravers of Augsburg.
Inspired by the artistic work of Thomas Ender (1793–1875) and the travel accounts in the tropics by Austrian naturalists, Rugendas arrived in Brazil in 1821, where he was soon hired as an illustrator for his first scientific expedition.

I should and wanted to be the illustrator of the continent newly discovered by Columbus,
I wanted to show the world what picturesque treasures the tropical world offers since only few organizations are allowed to follow the troublesome career.
I felt called upon to be the pilot of the arts on a field others will then present exhaustingly. (Johann Moritz Rugendas to Alexander von Humboldt)

He began to use oil painting in a new way, oil sketch painting. So Rugendas came early to impresionist painters, only Turner as precedent.

I painted this sheep attracted by the textures and, especially by the way the light passed through the ears. The protagonist ewe chest includes authentic wool.
In the video you can see how I paint. On the white tray in the upper right corner you can see the wool used.

"Nido de cuervos" o nido de cornejas (Corvus corone). Carrion crow nest

"Nido de cuervos" o nido de cornejas (Corvus corone). Carrion crow nest

Laurel Tucker

Laurel Tucker (née Cook) was born in Guernsey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guernsey) in 1951, attending Ladies College before moving to England in 1970 to complete a Degree Course at the Faculty of Art and Design at Bristol Polytechnic.

Laurel was 2nd Bird Illustrator of theYear 1979.

I discovered her evocative line-drawings in the book "The Big Bird Race" by Bill Oddie and David Tomlinson (1983); a book I bought in a second hand bookshop a few years ago in Newcastle when I was attracted by its illustrations.

Her work can be found in other bird books: the Handbook of Bird Identification for Europe and the Western Palearctic, the RSPB Handbook of British Birds and the MacMillan Guide to Bird Identification.

Sadly this talented young illustrator's life was cut short when she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage aged just thirty-five from which she never regained consciousness. She was working on the Macmillan Field Guide to Bird Identification by Alan Harris, Laurel Tucker and Keith Vinicombe (1989) (she completed 18 of the plates) and on the Handbook of Bird Identification for Europe and the Western Palearctic.
